Poetry and Pottery by ESOL Students January 19--February 1, 2004 Florida State University Museum of Fine Arts Opening reception: Tuesday, January 20, 2004 6:30--8:30pm

This year for our special joint project with FSU MoFA, ESOL students composed a poem and decorated a ceramic bowl with the poem and an illustration. The students' artwork were inspired by Ogata Kenzan's tradition of decorating his ceramics with painted images and poetry. First, students viewed a slide presentation of Ogata Kenzan's work provided by Oaklianna Brown, an intern at the Museum, and her colleagues. Then students composed an acrostic or cinquain poem. On December 2, 2003, students went on a field trip to Waddle Pots in Tallahassee Mall to decorate their bowl. The culmination of this project was the opening reception at the Museum where students viewed their artwork on display and participated in the "make and take" art activities. This project was funded by a mini-grant from the Leon County Schools Foundation.
