• Dr. Deborah Barnes

Dr. Deborah G. Barnes is a lifelong educator, counselor, author, and servant-leader with more than 32 years of experience in K–12 public schools, colleges, and universities. Raised in Wakulla County and deeply rooted in her faith, she lives by the verse “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13).

Currently serving as Assistant Principal of Curriculum and Attendance at James S. Rickards High School, Dr. Barnes is also a certified life coach who helps individuals unlock their potential in personal growth, financial stewardship, and spiritual purpose. Her journey is one of resilience and determination—from working three 20-hour-a-week jobs during college to purchasing her first home at age 22 and managing a full-time academic course load of 15–18 credit hours per semester.

Dr. Barnes earned a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership (2006), a Master’s in Public Administration (1989), and a Bachelor’s in Business Education (1987) from Florida A&M University, as well as an Educational Specialist degree in Higher Education (1994) from Florida State University.

Her impact extends far beyond the classroom. She’s championed nationwide reform in K–12 education and actively supports Black and underserved communities—donating 10% of her income to provide students and seniors with tuition assistance and necessities. Five of her former students have gone on to careers in the National Football League, crediting her guidance as transformative.

A respected speaker at local, state, and national conferences, Dr. Barnes is also the author of Great Counselors Are Different: A Spiritual Transformation of the Heart, available on her website, Amazon, Kindle, and bookstores. She is a proud member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an international society for women educators.

Dr. Barnes has been married for 28 years to her husband and soulmate, Dana Barnes Sr., and they are the proud parents of three college graduates: Dr. Dana Jr., Debbora, and Demani Barnes. She is the daughter of the late Frankie and Lee.
